American Palladium Eagle

Introduced in 2017, the American Palladium Eagle is the newest of the United States Mint’s major precious-metal Eagle programs, joining its gold, silver and platinum counterparts. Each coin contains one troy ounce of .9995 fine palladium and carries a legal-tender face value of $25. For its obverse, the Mint revived Adolph A. Weinman’s celebrated Winged Liberty design from the Mercury Dime of 1916–1945, depicting Liberty wearing a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought. The reverse also draws from Weinman’s work, adapting his 1907 American Institute of Architects gold medal design featuring a powerful eagle perched upon a rock while grasping a branch.

Unlike the continuously produced American Gold and Silver Eagles, the Palladium Eagle has been issued in limited quantities and in several different finishes, beginning with the bullion coin in 2017 and followed by Proof, Reverse Proof and Uncirculated editions in subsequent years. Its relatively low mintages, uncommon precious-metal composition and use of two historic Weinman designs give the series a distinctive character within modern American coinage. Combining palladium bullion with classic early-20th-century American artistry, the Palladium Eagle provides collectors with a modern interpretation of designs created by one of the most celebrated sculptors in U.S. numismatic history.
