Antique Gold Commemoratives

America’s classic gold commemorative coinage represents a small but fascinating chapter in U.S. numismatic history. Issued from 1903 through 1926, these coins were created to commemorate important people, anniversaries and events rather than for everyday commerce. The series began with the 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollars, honoring Thomas Jefferson and William McKinley, and continued with issues celebrating the Lewis and Clark Exposition, President McKinley, Ulysses S. Grant, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition and the anniversary of American independence. Most were struck as compact $1 gold pieces, but the series also produced several larger and especially significant gold issues.

Among the most important are the 1915-S Panama-Pacific and 1926 Sesquicentennial commemoratives. The Panama-Pacific program included a distinctive $2.50 Quarter Eagle as well as the extraordinary $50 gold pieces struck in both round and octagonal forms. The octagonal $50 remains the only octagonal U.S. coin ever produced and, together with its round counterpart, stands among the most impressive and coveted commemoratives in American numismatics. Equally significant is the 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Quarter Eagle, issued in conjunction with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its obverse features Liberty holding a torch and the Declaration of Independence, while Independence Hall appears on the reverse—directly connecting the coin to the founding of the United States. Together with the Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle, it is one of only two $2.50 gold commemorative issues of the classic era. From the diminutive gold dollars to the historic Sesquicentennial Quarter Eagle and monumental Pan-Pac $50s, pre-1933 gold commemoratives form a compact and remarkably diverse series combining scarcity, precious metal and some of the most important people and events in American history.
